It’s great to have you here!
I can’t wait to help you help your teen skyrocket their way towards reaching their academic potential!
Today we’re going to have a look at the difference between students who get top grades and those who don’t, and how we’re going to get YOUR teen into the former category.
Good or bad, crazy or normal, young or old, smart or dumb…
These are the sorts of categories we put people in. It’s human nature I guess.
High school works in the same way. You’re either smart or dumb, weird or normal, hot or not, a good student or a bad student.
The problem with this over-simplified categorization is that students generally come to identify themselves as one of these two categories. And more often than not (thanks to generally low teen self-esteem), it’s the negative one.
Most high school students think that you’re either good at studying, or you’re not.
They think you’re either born a smarty pants or a dumb bum, and there’s nothing you can do to change what cards you’ve been dealt.
This couldn’t be further from the truth.
Just like learning to tap dance or learning to play the saxophone, studying is a learnt skill. It can be learnt, practiced, and mastered by anyone.
It is NOT dependent on your ‘natural’ intelligence. Hocus pocus.
There are students who find calculus easy but have no idea how to prepare for an exam, and there are students who struggled to learn their times tables at elementary school, yet figure out a system for studying that gets them fantastic grades!
Even if your teen thinks that school absolutely "sucks" right now, I have no doubt that they ARE capable of enjoying learning, that they ARE capable of doing incredibly well at high school, and that they ARE capable of getting the grades you know they are.
The only students who "aren’t good at studying" are the ones who haven’t figured out how to do it in a way that works for THEM.
So what do the best students do?
In analyzing exactly what it is that makes some kids get consistently high exam results, two things in particular are have become obvious…
- These students know what THEY want to get out of school. School has a clear purpose to them.
- They apply a specific study formula every time they sit down to study. They’ve figured out what works for them, and they’ve stuck to it.
Over the next two weeks I’m going to go through one step at a time how you can help YOUR teen figure out why studying is important to them, and how to get their own study formula that guarantees THEIR academic success.
In my next email we’re going to talk about motivation and how you can help your teen get masses of it.
Until then, if you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to email me. I like emails and I love helping parents out one on one.
